Paint Protection Film, Answered

The questions owners and detailers in the USA and India ask us most.

What is paint protection film (PPF)?

PPF is a clear or coloured polyurethane film applied to a vehicle's paint. It absorbs stone chips, scratches and stains, so the factory clear coat underneath stays intact. A self-healing top coat closes light swirls with heat.

What is the difference between TPU and PCU film?

Both are polyurethane-based. PureShield PCU (polycarbonate urethane) is the higher tier: on our technical data sheet it has higher tensile strength and elongation, is rated stable to 120 °C (248 °F), and carries a 15 year warranty. PureShield TPU uses USA-sourced Lubrizol aliphatic TPU and Ashland adhesive and carries a 10 year warranty.

Does PureShield offer colour and matte PPF?

Yes. The colour library has more than 330 gloss, satin matte and matte colours, and the Matte, Satin Matte and Glossy Black technical data sheet covers them. All colour PPFs share the Glossy Black technical data.

How long does a PPF install take?

It depends on how much of the vehicle is covered and how much paint correction is needed. A front-end package takes less time than a full-body install. Your installer will quote a time after inspecting the car.

Can PPF be removed without damaging the paint?

Yes. When applied to healthy factory paint, PPF is designed to come off cleanly with heat and no adhesive residue. Repainted or damaged paint can lift with the film, so your installer will check the surface first.

How do I care for a car after installation?

Follow your installer's instructions. In general, avoid washing the car for the first several days while the film cures, then hand-wash with a pH-neutral shampoo and avoid abrasive pads and harsh solvents.

What does the warranty cover?

Warranty periods are listed on our technical data sheets: 15 years for PCU and 10 years for TPU, with film coverage such as yellowing, cracking and bubbling. Full terms, conditions and exclusions are set out in the warranty paperwork supplied with the install.

Can I add a ceramic or graphene coating over PPF?

Yes. Ceramic and graphene coatings are commonly applied over PPF for extra gloss and easier cleaning. PureShield also offers coatings and window film as part of one protection system.
